Priority species? No

The Australian government's Threatened Species Action Plan 2022-2032 selected over 100 priority species derived from consultation with threatened species experts and the wider community. While all species are important, focusing on a limited number of species can help target effort and resources so that outcomes can be achieved, measured and shared.

Description

The life history of the Striped Legless Lizard is poorly known and the understanding of fine scale population structure is limited and difficult to assess given the fragmented and disturbed nature of the species habitat and the difficulty in detecting the species due to its cryptic nature.

Threats

It is estimated that more than 99 percent of the Striped Legless Lizards natural temperate grassland habitat has been destroyed or drastically altered since European settlement. Ongoing loss, modification, degradation and fragmentation from urban and agricultural development, high intensity grazing from livestock and kangaroos and rock collection or destruction are the major obstacles to its survival and conservation.
