The Australian government's Threatened Species Action Plan 2022-2032 selected over 100 priority species derived from consultation with threatened species experts and the wider community. While all species are important, focusing on a limited number of species can help target effort and resources so that outcomes can be achieved, measured and shared.

Description

The Pinnacles Leaf-tailed Gecko is restricted to The Pinnacles, a rocky mountain approximately 25 km south-west of Townsville. They are nocturnal have only been found in habitats of layered rock with associated rainforest
vegetation.

Threats

Fire has been highlighted as the primary threat to the Pinnacles Leaf-tailed Gecko with unmanaged burning in the area for the purposes of cattle grazing has cuased rainforest to be turned into woodland. Invasive grasses growing at the rainforest boundary provide a thick, highly flammable fuel load that exacerbate effects of fire on rainforest margins. Australian leaf-tailed geckos are highly desirable in the domestic and international pet trade, and poaching and illegal export of range-restricted leaf-tailed geckos has happened in recent years.
