Other names: Lyon's Snake-eyed Skink
Priority species? No

The Australian government's Threatened Species Action Plan 2022-2032 selected over 100 priority species derived from consultation with threatened species experts and the wider community. While all species are important, focusing on a limited number of species can help target effort and resources so that outcomes can be achieved, measured and shared.

Description

Lyons Grassland Striped Skink is a small lizard with the only sightings at Springfield Station near Mount Surprise in far north Queensland between 1976 and 1981. No further sightings or records have occurred since this time, including from targeted surveys at the original detection location in 2016. Therefore, information about the biology and ecology of Lyons Grassland Striped Skink is extremely limited and is inferred from related skinks in the same genus.

Threats

The primary threat to the persistence of Lyons Grassland Striped Skink is its occurrence in one small area that is being degraded by cattle grazing and the encroachment of weeds. One or both of these changes is inferred to have caused a significant decline and potential extinction of this species.
