Priority Species? Yes
The Australian government's Threatened Species Action Plan 2022-2032 selected over 100 priority species derived from consultation with threatened species experts and the wider community. While all species are important, focusing on a limited number of species can help target effort and resources so that outcomes can be achieved, measured and shared.
Description
The red goshawk is a large, swift and powerful hawk, rufous-brown in colour, and growing to a length of 45?60cm, with a wingspan of 100?135cm. It is one of the most sexually dimorphic raptors in the world, with females nearly twice as heavy as males. The red goshawk is a solitary and secretive bird that is generally silent. Even when nesting, red goshawks are inconspicuous.
Threats
The threats to the Red Goshawk are habitat loss, disturbance and modification being the major threat. Also, inappropriate fire regimes have changed the habitat structure impacting the availability of prey for the Red Goshawk.
